Gr 3–6—Sammy Hayes-Rodriguez has never had an easy time fitting in at school. His mother is an inventor, his father is a graphic novel artist, and his beloved little sister has an immune condition that keeps her confined to the house. His best friend Trip has a talent for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. And then, there are the robots: a houseful of his mother’s creations, programmed to do everything from housework to tutoring, plus some that don’t do anything useful at all. When Sammy’s mother insists that he take a robot named E to school with him, he knows that he’s in for a record-breaking amount of teIDg and trouble-and when E starts insisting that he is Sammy’s brother, the situation goes from bad to worse. Sammy refuses to have anything to do with E at school, even when the robot’s popularity starts to eclipse Sammy’s and Trip’s. But when E is kidnapped, Sammy realizes that he was starting to get fond of his robot brother, and he teams up with friends (both human and robot) to solve the mystery of E’s disappearance. This light and funny story incorporates plenty of humor, both in the text and in the accompanying comic-style illustrations. Sammy’s relationships with his parents, sister, and best friend are strong, if not particularly nuanced. A fast-moving plot, lots of jokes, and a host of weird robots will draw readers in, especially those looking for books similar to series such as “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” (Abrams/Amulet) and “Timmy Failure” (Candlewick).—Misti Tidman, Licking County Library, Newark, OH

The main character in HOUSE OF ROBOTS is Sammy. He lives with his sister Maddie and their parents in a wacky house full of all kinds of crazy robots created by his scientist mother. For example, one ingenious robot is Mr. Moppenshine, who cleans the house. The artwork showing Mr. Moppenshine cleaning the house is really funny. There is a fantastic series of artwork in chapter 18, "A day in the life of Mr. Moppenshine!" It shows how this crazily efficient robot goes around cleaning things–even going so far as to stick his head in the toilet. At that point, Mr. Moppenshine remarks that he is grateful that he can’t really smell anything.

Sammy explains that his sister, Maddie, suffers from SCID, which stands for "Severe Combined Immunodeficiency." Sammy explains that this means Maddie has a lot of trouble fighting off any kind of infection. Maddie can hardly ever go out of the house, and basically she can’t do much physical activity.

The story begins as Sammy’s mom insists that Sammy take her latest robotic invention, "E," to school for a "Take a Robot to School Day." Mom explains that it’s a "big, super important experiment." (The reader does not really see what the experiment is until much later in the book.) Of course his robot gets into all kinds of mischief at school, including a gigantic food fight. I really like the funny artwork showing the robot in the food fight. E happily exclaims, "This is the best first day a robots ever had!"

Well, After E’s first day at school, his mom does some tinkering and makes some enhancements in the robot. Then she insists that Sammy take him to school again. There is some type of big experiment going on, but she won’t tell Sami exactly what.
